May 10 Lake Murray

Going into this tournament I was very confident of catching 20 pounds within the first couple of hours based on the way they bit the Sunday prior. After the first couple of hours we only had two to three pounds and the prospects of catching much more than that looked pretty bleak.

The fish I had caught had all been on topwater so when they didn't we wasted the morning jumping from spot to spot trying to find a topwater bite that was not happening at all for us.

That is when we made the decision to go to plan B. The Spot Remover Jig! Soon after tying it on we discovered that if you made a cast parallel to a boat dock toward the shallow end more often than not a bite was in the offing. In the coarse of an hour and a half we had replaced the five small bass we had in the livewell with the 11.29 pounds we weighed in. I only wish we had had more time to fish once we figured out our bite.

While I am disappointed in finishing 25 I did learn it is not always about coming in first place but trying to get the best finish possible when the conditions or the bite is not in your favor.

On this day we turned what very easily could have been a fiftieth or worst place finish into a twenty-fifth place finish.

Those points may make a huge difference at the end of the season.

The weather was beautiful and sunny in the 80's.
